Our story

It all started in 2009 with a couple of Realtors and the local Cars & Coffee Club…

Although Doug Landin never really had a cool car, he always enjoyed them and would attend the occasional local Cars & Coffee Club gathering, organized by fellow Realtor, Don Welch. At a Cars & Coffee gathering in October of 2009, Doug arrived as usual to admire the “rolling art” and talk engines and paint, but was amazed at what had come out of the woodwork that day.  All local cars, more than 40, had shown up, with 40 others that had said they could not make it for various reasons.  It was at that moment that Landin’s vision to host an automotive weekend in the Vail Valley came to light. Having read about some of the great automotive gatherings around the country, like Pebble Beach and Amelia Island, Landin had done his research and the planning began with a small group of local car enthusiast. Approaching the Vail Valley Jet Center and the Town of Vail about being venues for these events was the final step and with approval from both, the first Vail Automotive Classic series of events became a reality. The first year the event hosted about 115 cars and 25 aircraft on display. Many years later, the series of events has grown to include the Wheels & Wings Festival with over 200 cars in 21 different classes, more than 40 aircraft, including single engine pistons, jets and War Birds, more than 100 motorcycles, and spectacular aerobatics shows, an Auto Auction, benefitting local charities, and a car show in the magnificent setting of Vail Village, that brings participants back year after year… making the Vail Automotive Classic one of the premier automotive & aircraft gatherings in the Colorado Rocky Mountains.
